About Unalakleet Native Corporation
Unalakleet Native Corporation (UNC) is a for-profit Alaska Native Corporation established under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) of 1971. Headquartered in Unalakleet, Alaska—located along the historic Iditarod Trail between Anchorage and Nome—UNC is proudly owned by Alaska Native shareholders.
UNC is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors, with elections held annually during the Shareholders Meeting each November. Board members serve staggered two-year terms, ensuring continuity and representation.
Our Community Role
UNC plays a vital role in supporting the village of Unalakleet. Through its growing range of facilities—including rental properties, office spaces, grocery stores, a restaurant, and a mechanic shop—UNC helps meet the essential needs of the community. By offering diverse employment opportunities, UNC contributes to the village’s economy and supports local households with critical goods and services.
Subsidiary: Unalakleet Investments, LLC
UNC owns one subsidiary, Unalakleet Investments, LLC, founded in 1999. Initially focused on leasing buildings to the federal government for its first 18 years, the company became 8(a) certified in recent years. In 2017, it shifted its focus toward developing capabilities in emerging technologies, reflecting a strategic vision for growth and innovation.
Cultural and Economic Strength
Unalakleet is a traditional community known for its rich cultural heritage and history as a center of trade. Today, it hosts one of the most active economies in the Norton Sound region. The community maintains a subsistence lifestyle, relying on natural resources like fish, seal, caribou, moose, and bear for survival and cultural continuity.
Planning for the Future
UNC adopted the local economic development plan (2014–2019) and works collaboratively with the Unalakleet City Council and the Native Village of Unalakleet. This joint effort supports shared goals for sustainable growth and improved quality of life in the region.
Board Elections
Board elections are held once a year at the annual Shareholders Meeting in November.
